Short Film Research: Ouija Sex: Comedy

Hey everyone, welcome back to our blog! Today we will be looking at and researching the comedy Ouija Sex, which picked up several awards and was selected for the 14th short film competition.

In this film, we noticed the sounds being very intense and serious at first, we thought that this film wasn't a comedy at all. Later on in the film the the sounds started to get a little more in serious going along with the plot that the film wasn't serious at all. There were many sounds in the film that had a lot of crashes as well, emphasizing the clumsiness of the husband in this film who lost his wife. The song played had an Italian ring to it, we are unsure if this is common in comedy films though.

The shots that we saw throughout this film mainly consisted of close-ups, mainly focusing on the main character himself, as comedies typically focus on a few amount of people to emphasize the humor. Ouija Sex focuses on a man who lost his wife as he communicates with her through the Ouija Board, in a way we didn't expect which is what makes it a comedy. It was revealed through a medium shot that there were other people around the husband when he was playing the game revealing his silly insanity.

When looking at the editing, we noticed that there is very little editing done, if any at all. In this comedy in particular, no special effects were needed as comedy is mainly portrayed through the actor, the source of entertainment in a comedy. This typically requires no editing as we have seen in this film with the husband taking the floor.

When watching Ouija Board, we enjoy the idea of the conventions being challenged of communicating with your passed significant other respectfully. This has a sort of dark humor to it but it's different that the husband is talking sexually to his dead wide through a board game. The sudden twist of the group of people that appeared after the shot change acting a fool just as the husband was too hypocritical because at first, he criticized the man who was being a 'pervert.' We honestly enjoyed that because it brought the film together at the end, successfully making it a comedy.

However, we do have some issues with this comedy film. It seemed rushed throughout and was confusing at first. It was difficult to capture the purpose of the film and we honestly didn't think it was funny, just peculiar. It seemed difficult to shove a comedy into a short film and we believe we witnessed this problem in this film. The plot didn't make much sense and it wasn't easy to follow overall.
